Free, daylong, community-based learning workshop

Brooklyn: The first Brooklyn Skillshare will be held on Saturday, October 10th at the Gowanus Studio Space (119 8th Street, Brooklyn btw 2nd & 3rd Avenues) from 10am – 6pm.

The Brooklyn Skillshare is a community-based, community-led, and community-building learning event organized and taught by Brooklyn residents. It is a one-day event of learning, making, sharing and doing. A group of Brooklyn volunteers has been meeting since June to organize the first event, and all of the teachers are all volunteers. Organizers are working to gather donations for food, drinks, and supplies to keep the event free, thereby broadening accessibility to be truly nonexclusive.

The day will consist of 5 blocks of hour and a half long classes, with 3 classes taking place per block. Participants can attend as many or as few classes as they like, but are encouraged to make a day of learning.

Classes for the October 10th Brooklyn Skillshare include: Kombucha brewing, bike mechanics 101, screenprinting, DIY electronic audio, cooking with raw food, burlesque, and many, many more.

The seeds for the Brooklyn Skillshare began in the Spring of 2009 when organizer Meg Wachter attended a similar event in Boston, and was inspired by the weekend-long workshops offered on a recurring basis – free of charge.

Watchter explains that “We know that Brooklyn is in endless supply of artistry and talent, and since we all have something to teach and to learn from each other. We believe that education is a right, not a commodity – and hope this inclusive project will grown and foster a reciprocal community in Brooklyn, as we hope to continue holding Skillshares throughout the year, funding permitting.”

The Brooklyn Skillshare thanks Brooklyn Based, The Gowanus Studio Space, Transportation Alternatives, Glasslands Gallery, Horse + Dragon, Brooklyn Creative League, and Sweet Tooth of the Tiger for their generous support.
