Veggie Island Grows — by Veggie Island
Veggie Island is the best little farmstand in the world (or, at least, in Far Rockaway). I know this because I spent last summer working there, crashing on owner/founder Shaun’s couch, taking lunch breaks to go swim in the ocean, and playing with his dog Piper. Oh yeah, and working. Veggie Island is packed with the best people, what they do is the best thing ever, and I’ve never been so proud/awed by a person’s whole-heartedly good approach to life, work, and their community.
This summer, Veggie Island will be opening a greenhouse + starting a gardening program. They will be growing everything organically, promoting seed saving, and starting a composting program to utilize the organic waste produced by both the garden and Veggie Island itself.
Check them out at their project page, where you can back for things like ‘zines (I’ve seen ‘em, they’re great), mixtapes (I’ve listened to them all day, every day, for months, and they never get old. So endlessly great), seed packets, and smoothies (Shaun is the King, just give the Jasmine Tea and Melon smoothie a whirl and try to tell me you’re not addicted).
